How to dress like a 1950s Bobby Soxer with Cateye Glasses & Scarf

Updated on December 21, 2012

Let loose your inner Bobby Soxer and swing into the 50's

Flip up your ponytail, tie on a scarf and let's Rock 'n Roll. Like the Big Bopper says "Chantilly lace and a pretty face - And a pony tail hanging down - That wiggle in the walk and giggle in the talk - Makes the world go round"

Sheer scarves, bobby sox and cateye glasses - sounds like the 50's to me :)

What is a "Bobby Soxer"?

What is a "Bobby Soxer"?

"Bobby soxer is a 1940s sociologic coinage denoting the overzealous, usually teenage girls, fans of singer Frank Sinatra, the first singing teen idol; by the 1950s, fashionable adolescent girls wore poodle skirts and rolled down their socks to the ankle. In high schools, the gymnasium often was used as a dance floor, however, since street shoes and street detritus might damage the polished wood floors, the students were required to remove their shoes and dance in their bobby socks, thus the phrase 'sock hop'."

Cateye Glasses

Cateyes - how to find them for fun wear and for your prescription

Cat eye glasses, which get their name for the cat-eye shape of their frames, were incredibly popular during the 1950s and 1960s. You may picture a school marm but Audrey Hepburn wore them in Breakfast at Tiffanys and other pop icons including Marilyn Monroe contributed to the popularity and success of the cat eye frame.

In recent years cat eye glasses have come back into style. Many frame boutiques and glasses stores sell modern day takes on these popular retro eye glasses. In the 50s and 60s, the point at the top edges of the cat eye glasses was very strong, and often included little decorations at the corners. Today's cat eye frames are usually much more subtle.

If you are looking for real vintage glasses they are available online at collector's sites and auction sites. Be sure to read listings carefully to check for condition. You can also shop the retro and costume sites for cateye replicas. These vary in price depending on whether the glasses are intended for costume or for everyday wear.

Here's some helpful tips for searching for the perfect pair of cateye glasses:

1. Do you want cateye glasses for fun or costume ? Use any search engine and type "vintage style cateye glasses" . You'll see listings for sites that are selling newly made cateyes in an array of colors and styles and sites that sell one of a kind vintage finds.

2. Do you want to put your prescription in cateye frames ? Use the search term "prescription cat eyeglass frames" to find prescription grade frames and to screen out the sites that sell cateyes that are for fun use only.
